Armour Stone – FAQ

Armour stone is a generic term for stone that is used for landscaping retaining walls, shoreline walls when protecting from waves and/or flowing water. It is also used for constructing plateaus when restructuring slopes and uneven terrain.

Armour stone is priced by the tonne and generally in $72 – $85 price range.

If calculating per foot, a general estimate per 10′ layer would be in the range of $75 per foot.

Armour stone is dense, requiring heavy equipment to transport, unload and move into place on location.

Generally, an average armour stone measuring 4′ x 3′ x 2′ would weigh in the range of 4000 lbs or 2 tons.

Armour stone is natural and is the top layer of limestone in a quarry which is separated and lifted off the ground with an excavator. The surface environment in the area determines the colour and various levels of beauty revealed.

The layers are consistent in height which makes an excellent form suitable for retaining walls and embankment use as permanent ground retention.

Smaller pieces of armour stone are cut with a hydraulic guillotine on a press.

Larger sections may be cut with a rotary stone saw mounted on an excavator or pre-drilling and then using a hydraulic stone splitter.

The cuts are measured and precise, eliminating gaps while achieving a tight, clean fit on site.

Filter fabric or an approved alternative is used under and behind all armour stone installations.

The granular base and fill material used is commonly crusher run limestone.
